Johan’s TriFest 2011 News – June 2011

Race Day Fast Approaching!

This year’s TriFest will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2011.  Current water temperature at Lake Monterey is just about seventy degrees.  Wetsuits will likely be allowed, but if we get a lot of hot weather in the next week and a half, this may change things. Hydrate well.

10th Anniversary Celebration!

We plan to make this a pretty special event as it is our 10th Anniversary to benefit Van Andel Institute Hope on the Hill, Hospice of Michigan and in honor and remembrance of Johan Visser.  We are planning on a pulled pork barbeque picnic starting at 10:30 a.m. for all volunteers and participants shortly after the race.  We sincerely hope that you will join us one more year as a participant or volunteer and then celebrate with us after the race on the 18th of June as we bring this event to a close.  A limited number of spectator/family tickets can be purchase on race day for $5.   Thank you for being a part of Johan’s and keeping this race going for all these years!

Get Registered!

We’re still one of the better deals as far as triathlons go.  If you’ve already signed up, tell your slacker tri friends you don’t want to beat them twice at this race.  Online registration powered by Active.com.  Mail-in applications can be printed off of Johan’s TriFest website or picked up at Striders in Grandville and many fine biking and running specialty shops in the Great Lakes region.  Unfortunately, tee shirts cannot be guaranteed to participants who register in the last weeks of open registration.  There will be No Race Day Registration or Transfers.

Packet Pick-Up

Packet pick-up is scheduled for Friday, June 17 at Striders during regular store hours.  Striders is located at 4045 Chicago Drive in Grandville, Michigan.  Packet pick-up will also be held Saturday, June 18 at the race site starting at 6:00 a.m.  If you’re a current USAT member, you need to bring your current USAT membership card with a valid photo I.D. to packet pick-up.  If you don’t have your USAT membership card, you can print off proof of your current membership from the USAT Website.

ALL athletes are required to show photo ID regardless of USAT membership. NO ID, NO RACE, NO EXCEPTIONS.  Every single participant must have a photo ID, this includes all relay participants. Youth athletes without an ID must be accompanied by a parent/guardian with a photo ID.  Annual members are required to bring their membership card every time they compete in a USAT sanctioned event.

Johan’s Sanctioned by USAT

Once again, Johan’s TriFest will be sanctioned by USAT.  This means all of their rules apply.  Check out all the Rules and Regulations on the USAT website.  They also have a listing of most common violated rules

Where’s the Race Site?

Johan’s TriFest is held on the east side Sandy Pines Resort in Hopkins, Michigan. The race site address is: 3631 26th St Dorr, MI 49323-9538.  If you use a different online mapping program and the Dorr address doesn’t work, try Hopkins, Michigan instead.

Construction on US131 at the Dorr exit

The Bridge over US131 on 142nd St. is being replaced.  If you’re traveling to the race site from the north, you will be able to get of the US131 at the Dorr exit (Exit 68 – 142nd Ave).  However, if you are coming from the south, you need to take Exit 64 (Wayland Exit – 135th Ave.) and approach the race site from the south.

Course Maps available on the Website

Maps of the transition area, swim, bike, and run course are available for viewing on Johan’s TriFest website.

Racking Your Bike Saturday Morning

Check in and get body marked before entering the transition area on Saturday morning.  For security reasons, only marked athletes will be allowed in transition before, during, and after the event.  Also, bike racks are designed to accommodate 7 bikes per rack.  This is accomplished when bikes are racked in an alternating pattern on the rack.  If one bike is on the right side of the rack, the next bike should be racked on the left side of the rack.  This pattern allows for maximum transition spaces.

Volunteers ALWAYS Appreciated

Do you have a friend or relative that does not want to compete in Johan’s TriFest, but would love to participate somehow?  Volunteer registration still has opportunities available.  All volunteers will receive an exclusive volunteer t-shirt and tons of thanks.  If you know someone that would like to donate a little of their time and a lot of enthusiasm, we would appreciate the help.  Contact us through the volunteer link on the website or email us at johanstrifest@aol.com.

Accommodations Page on Johan’s TriFest Website

There’s a list of a variety of places to stay which are as close as possible to the race site.  This is by no means a comprehensive list of places in west Michigan and we don’t have any deals going on with any of the hotels.  If you do stay in the area, let us know about the good places and the not-so-good places since we would eventually like to offer deals through a host hotel.
